How to Safely Reset a Tripped Breaker

A single tripped breaker after you ran the microwave and the toaster at once is usually harmless, and you can reset it yourself from outside the panel. But a breaker is also a safety device, and there are clear warning signs that mean you should stop and call a licensed electrician instead. This guide covers both.

Why breakers trip

The safe way to reset a breaker

  1. Unplug or switch off what was running. If a space heater, hair dryer, or vacuum tripped the breaker, turn it off or unplug it first so you are not resetting straight back into an overload.

  3. Find the tripped breaker. A tripped breaker usually sits in the middle position, not fully ON. Some have a small orange or red marker.
  4. Stand to the side and push firmly to OFF. Position yourself to the side of the panel, not directly in front of it. Push the breaker all the way to OFF first — most breakers must be moved fully OFF before they will reset.
  5. Push it back to ON. Move the same breaker firmly back to the ON position. If power returns and stays on, the reset worked.
  6. Reintroduce loads gradually. Plug devices back in one at a time. If it trips again when a particular device turns on, that device or that circuit is the problem — leave it off and call a pro.

It is fine to reset a breaker one time to confirm it was a simple overload. It is not fine to keep flipping a breaker that keeps tripping.
